Your Tour Guide

A native of far north Queensland, Karl Buderus was born and bred in Cairns. As a Cub and then a Boy Scout he developed a love for the outdoors and native wildlife. With the Scouts he camped and hiked in many locations: Oak Forest, Mantaka, Clohsey River, Mulgrave River, Walsh’s Pyramid, Rat Island at Kamerunga etc, etc.

Work took Karl south, 20+ years in Brisbane and 11 years at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. Finally he and his wife El managed to escape back to Cairns leasing the kiosk and café at Cairns Coconut Resort. Karl’s passion for rainforest country drew him to the Wet Tropics Management Authority to participate in their tour guide training and is now a certified Wet Tropics Tour Guide. In addition Karl has a Certificate III in Tourism.

In 2014 Karl and his wife set up home in Yungaburra and they have been captured by the natural beauty of the Atherton Tableland. Recently he won the Cultural Connections section of the Wet Tropics Tour Guide Competition 2020. His presentation can be viewed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvydlut97Ag&t=16s

With a strong desire to learn more Karl decided to pursue a Certificate III in Tourism. To assist he applied for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). He was granted RPL for the 15 units. Great! This sounds easy, far from it. A lot of work was put in by the assessor and Karl. Provision of many supporting documents and then at least 12 hours of assessment interviews. BUT, it was well worth it and a great learning experience.
